Good to see some bass players that understand that picks are for guitarists!  Grin

I use a little slap in my technique but more as a way to accent certain notes in more aggressive riffs. Mainly I use my index, middle and ring fingers.

I was thinking about getting a good Bass and starting it up, possibly. Is it any different from playing an Acoustic Guitar?

Different like how? Does it have different strings? Different chords? What?

Well for one, the strings are considerably thicker on a bass. Secondly, it's a completely different theory. While you can use chords (I use them quite frequently), you're usually fretting single notes. It all really depends on your individual playing style. My best recommendation is to just get yourself a decent beginner bass and experiment on your own.

I'm back, by the way haha. I totally forgot I had an account on here. I have some new Afterlight goodies I'll post in a bit.

Yeah, because no bassists actually DO use chords...

not every bassist only plays eighth notes with a pick...nothing sounds cooler than an augmented chord on bass rolley

I have been playing bass a little over a year. Once I picked it up I loved it. I am in a band but the Lead guitarist knows i'm still not that experienced and he helps me out a lot. The one who taught me (Who is playing Rhythm Guitar in the band) taught me to play with a pick I play pick on the faster songs my bands play though i'm trying to convert over to my fingers on some of the songs but right now I suck using my fingers.

I can't play any instrument. So I don't know all the technical mumbo jumbo. But, I know talent when I hear it. And in my opinion Les Claypool is the best bassist.

I has a happy.  Grin

I won an Ampeg SVT 4 bass head on Ebay for $750. 1200 watts of power with a tube preamp. My dream bass rig is now one huge step closer to completion... oh yeah, I just pre-cummed a little.

Then you need to get out there and listen to a few more bassists sir. Not to say he is not good, but the best is a very bold statement. Certainly one of the best at the style he plays, but, THE best, not a chance. Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Markus Miller, Charles Mingus. There are a lot, but I suppose it is a matter of opinion either way.

“So, when Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, if you go for all these fairy tales, that ‘evil’ woman convinced the man to eat the apple, but the apple came from the Tree of Knowledge. And the punishment that was then handed down, the woman gets to bleed and the guy’s got to go to work, is the result of a man desiring, because his woman suggested that it would be a good idea, that he get all the knowledge that was supposedly the property and domain of God. So, that right away sets up Christianity as an anti-intellectual religion. You never want to be that smart. If you’re a woman, it’s going to be running down your leg, and if you’re a guy, you’re going to be in the salt mines for the rest of your life. So, just be a dumb fuck and you’ll all go to heaven. That’s the subtext of Christianity.”

that's a very cliche opinion.

it's like saying you think the best guitarist is Malmsteem or Vai

Well, the main problem here is that most non-musicians (and sadly, more than a few musicians as well) think that there can actually be a such thing as "best _______ ever". There is simply no such thing when it comes to music. For every musician that excels in one or two particular categories, there is another who is more proficient in another. That's where it comes solely down to opinion, and Deadlight already stated that this is simply his opinion.
